Electricity
The Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Electric Power Company was incorporated in 1901.[1] In 1913 it applied for an order permitting them to break into the streets of Beeston, Stapleford and Sandiacre. Thirty-two streets were named in Stapleford.[2] The order was confirmed in 1914.[3] Progress was slow. In September 1919 a street light was erected at The Roach. The electricity company charged £9 for lighting this lamp from the 1st September until the 31st March.[4] Even that was converted back to gas in July 1926[5] In 1921 the parish church was waiting to have electricity installed but could not do so until the cable came down Church Street.[6] The first street lights powered by electricity was in May 1932 when 4 lamps were installed in Toton Lane and 2 lamps in Cemetery Road.[7]
Even into the 1950s many houses did not have electricity installed. In 1947 the Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire Electric Power Co. became part of the East Midlands Electricity Board. Privatised in 1990, the company was purchased by Powergen in 1998 and subsequently rebranded as E.ON.
